Yeast

Read:

Mark 8:11-15

Reflect:

It is interesting to hear Jesus mention the Pharisees and Herod in a reference to yeast. The Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign from heaven to prove that He is who He claimed to be (v. 11). They only wanted to catch Jesus out with a trick question. On the other hand Herod was curious about Jesus and wanted to see Christ perform a miracle (Luke 23:8). He wanted only to be entertained. Unbelief and amusement. The Pharisees and Herod essentially miss what Jesus is really about.

Jesus then warns His disciples not to make the same mistake. They were concerned about their lack of bread (physical provision) and their lack of planning. Jesus tells them that He is not with them merely to provide for their physical needs, or to wag a finger when they forget to bring bread. He is so much more than that.

Jesus is the King of heaven. He is the Lamb that was slain and the Lion of Judah. He is the ultimate sacrifice for our sin and the One who overcame death. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is more than a theory that needs to be disproved or a must-see parlour trick. He is more than a food coupon or a discount voucher. He is God. Let us never forget that.

Respond:

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are more than I can ever imagine. Forgive me for the times I get consumed with all the peripheral things that I miss the truth of who You really are. Please reveal more of yourself to me that I may know you more and love you better. Amen.
